Target 4.7 | Situation Analysis of SDG 4 with a Gender Lens

Target 4.7 envisions education for sustainable societal transformation. It calls for all people to acquire the knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes vital for peaceful and sustainable societies. The target encompasses Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as well as Global Citizenship Education (GCED). To fulfill this target, themes such as education for peace and non-violence, human rights, health and sexuality, sustainable lifestyles and cultural diversity must be integrated into curricula, teaching, assessments, and policies. Gender equality is implicit in the target, but countries may need to be more conscious about it and be explicit in the way gender perspective is integrated at all stages of implementation, from education policy and planning to the classroom and to monitoring and in the lessons learned.
