Global survey for teachers on education for sustainable development and global citizenship education

UNESCO, together with Education International, is conducting a global survey of teachers’ readiness to integrate Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Global Citizenship Education (GCED) into their teaching. The study will gather information on teachers’ readiness to teach ESD and GCED, the training and support available to them, approaches taken to teaching ESD and GCED across the curriculum and in assessing learning outcomes as well as other ESD- and GCED-related activities in school and with local communities.

Under the guidance of a Technical Expert Group established in 2020, we have developed an on-line survey that will be used to collect information from teachers worldwide. The survey is available in several languages including the six official UN languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish). The survey can be found at the following link: https://survey.alchemer.eu/s3/90310926/Teachers-readiness-for-education-for-sustainable-development-and-global-citizenship. Teachers will have until 25 April to respond to the survey which should take about 30-40 minutes to complete.

We would be grateful for your assistance in disseminating the survey amongst teachers and teacher networks in your country to reach as wide a teacher audience as possible. The survey targets all teachers in formal primary and secondary education, regardless of the subject(s) they teach.

The survey of teachers will help to fill an important data gap by providing information from the perspective of one of the key actors in education systems worldwide – teachers themselves – and the extent to which they are motivated, adequately prepared and supported to mainstream ESD and GCED in their teaching.

The results of the survey will be presented at UNESCO’s next Global Forum on ESD and GCED which will be hosted by the Republic of Korea in September 2021. The Global Forum which takes place every two years brings together policymakers, civil society and experts and practitioners in ESD and GCED. In 2021, the Forum will examine the progress that has been made towards achieving SDG Target 4.7 and the barriers to progress. Studies produced for, and presented during the Forum will help assess the extent to which ESD and GCED are being mainstreamed in education systems and how ESD and GCED can help to build resilience going forward.
